Product Design

Here are a range of projects that showcase my skills in product design, and in the design of electronic circuits. I have a particular interest and focus in sound-reactive electronics.

The 'Visual Synthesizer'

This is a project that utilises Arduino, Processing and Pure Data to create an interactive visual synthesiser. Featuring a range of knobs, buttons and flexi-sensors, the Visual Synthesiser uses the data received from its inputs to create noises using Pure Data, and visuals using Processing. The Cephalic Sonifier

The Cephalic Sonifier is an interactive object with a range of sensors and inputs that a user can play with to manipulate a number of elements that make up a pre-composed droning soundscape. There are knobs that determine the mix of certain elements, buttons that trigger one-shot samples, and other sensors that control the parameters of effects. The Cephalic Sonifier is an object that is able to used by someone with no special knowledge, and is thus accessible to anyone who comes across it in an installation context. Each users experience of the Cephalic Sonifier is unique, but still adheres to the over-arching artistic vision. The use of a Mannequin’s head as the housing for the interface makes for an interesting user experience, as the process of pressing, prodding and manipulating the face creates a personal relationship with the object, a relationship that is further explored through the particular sounds that I chose for my composition. The Disco Medusae

The Disco Medusae is a garment that summons ambient soundscapes as it’s appendages are caressed, capturing the essence of the deep sea through lush aural textures and gentle diffused light. As the pressure sensors reach a certain threshold, audio samples on a computer are triggered, while at the same time a white LED increases in brightness. It also features RGB LED strips that slowly shift through a range of hues from blue to purple mimicing the bioluminesence of deep sea creatures, when diffused through layers of plastic tentacles. Made in collaboration with Lucas Slebos and Logan Adams

The A-Visor

The A-Visor is a wearable garment that produces music visualisation using an array of LEDs. A plastic screen is attached to a Visor, creating a private 'theatre' for the user to experience a light show that reacts dynamically to music.
